Is having an expensive wedding worth it? Figure $35k+

Read about this couple taking out a $40k loan to pay for it. Another couple saved $75k.

That's a shit ton of money in my eyes. You can knock a huge principle off your house, have more towards retirement, etc.

I had an "expensive" wedding. But in my wedding invitations I just said "monetary gifts appreciated". The money I got ended up paying for the wedding and some of the honeymoon.

I don’t understand why anyone would spend more than a couple thousand on a wedding. Chit, going to the courthouse and having a small party with close friends/family makes a lot more sense. Isn’t there data showing a direct correlation between the expense of weddings and likelihood of divorce?

Fuck no. If I ever get married it will be at a church and have a modest reception and certainly no open bar. If money were no object then reception would be like a classy black tie event at a fine dining venue with someone playing a grand piano. But if I'm paying for it myself with a regular job? If the wife's parents are paying sure. That's tradition. I am not financing a fancy wedding. Would rather out it towards a down payment on a house.

A big wedding is probably a good idea. She's going to steal half your cash when she leaves you anyways so you might as well blow through a chunk of it and enjoy the good time.

The funniest part is when they divorce a couple of years after blowing 35k+

Great way to start out your life together in the hole. They're fun to attend, but I would never spend that kind of money on a wedding.

My wedding was like 3 or 4k, had it in the party room of a restaurant with an open bar and it was a good time.
